Dungeons & Dragons
Dungeons & Dragons is the classic fantasy roleplaying game where you and your friends become daring adventurers in a world of magic and monsters. You explore ancient ruins, solve mysteries in misty towns, and bargain with powerful beings to get what you need. People love it because your choices drive the story, not a script. You can keep it heroic and bright, or delve into dark fantasy and gothic chills. A professional Game Master prepares a tailored adventure and brings it to life so you can focus on playing your character.
A typical session runs for 3 to 4 hours and balances roleplay, exploration, and tactical combat. It is welcoming for newcomers and rewarding for veterans, making it perfect for a one-shot, birthday, or team event, whether online or in person. Our Game Masters teach as you go, manage the rules, and pace the action so everyone shines. Find the right fit and book your date: browse our Game Masters.
How to play Dungeons & Dragons
In play, you describe what your character attempts to do. When the outcome is uncertain, you roll a twenty-sided die and add a bonus from your abilities or skills. If your total meets or exceeds a target number, you succeed. In combat, everyone rolls for initiative. On your turn, you can move, take an action such as attacking or casting a spell, and sometimes a bonus action. Damage is calculated using different dice. Advantage or disadvantage can influence a roll. Your character sheet tracks abilities, gear, and special features.
You bring a character concept and a willingness to collaborate. Dice and a microphone are helpful, but our Game Masters can provide digital dice, pre-made characters, and all the rules you need at the table. For online play, they set up maps, tokens, and voice chat, and guide you on how it works. See the tools they use here: online play platforms. A one-shot focuses on a clear goal and concludes in one session. A campaign develops over time, featuring character progression, downtime choices, and consequences that shape the world.

Common questions
I'm new to D&D. Do I need to know the rules?
No prior experience is required. A professional Game Master will explain what your abilities mean, when to roll a d20, and how turns work both in and out of combat. You can begin with a straightforward character that aligns with your concept, or select a pre-made sheet to dive straight in. The pace of the game matches the group, ensuring you never feel out of your depth. If your group includes a few veterans, the Game Master will still keep things clear and ensure newcomers have their moment in the spotlight.
Which edition will we play, 2024, 5e, or an earlier version?
You can choose. Many of our Game Masters run the 2024 rules or 5e, and some also offer classics like 4e, 3.5e, 3e, or AD&D. When you book, let us know your preference and the Game Master will prepare the adventure and characters for that ruleset. If you're unsure, the 2024 rules and 5e are excellent for mixed groups. What is the ideal number of players for D&D?
D&D accommodates between 1 and 7 players. The ideal number is typically 3 to 6, as this keeps scenes flowing and allows everyone a chance to participate. Solo play is also an option, featuring tailored challenges and supportive allies managed by the Game Master if required. For larger groups of 7, anticipate more streamlined battles and stricter time management to ensure everyone has a turn. Inform the Game Master of your player count in advance, and they will adjust the difficulty of encounters and the complexity of puzzles accordingly.
How long does a D&D session last and what can we fit in?
Most sessions last 3 to 4 hours. This suits a focused adventure arc, such as reaching a ruin, overcoming two or three key obstacles or battles, and concluding with a satisfying choice or reveal. The Game Master schedules a short break and prepares flexible scenes to adjust the pace as necessary. Longer stories can span multiple sessions, with progress and treasure carried over if you choose to turn it into a campaign.
Can we bring our own characters and what level are they?
Yes. For the 2024 rules or 5e, you can bring a character you created, and the Game Master will review it for table balance. For one-shots, levels 1 to 5 are ideal, but higher-level play is possible upon request. If you’d rather skip preparation, the Game Master can provide pre-generated characters linked to the adventure. Playing older editions is also an option with some Game Masters, who can assist you in converting concepts or provide ready-made sheets for those rules.
Do we need miniatures or a virtual tabletop for D&D?
Minis and grids are optional. Many Game Masters run D&D with maps and tokens for tactical clarity, or use theatre of the mind for a more relaxed setup. In person, the Game Master can bring printed maps and dice if you ask. Online, they typically use a virtual tabletop such as Roll20, Foundry, or Fantasy Grounds, along with voice chat. You can see common tools here: online play platforms. Either way, the Game Master will explain how to use what they provide.
Is D&D suitable for children or mixed age groups?
Yes. D&D can be run with age-appropriate themes and a gentle tone. A Game Master will minimise gore, avoid adult topics, and favour puzzles, teamwork, and heroic victories. Rules can be taught step by step so younger players remain engaged. For groups with kids and adults, the Game Master balances spotlight time and ensures encounters are clear and fair. Share any content preferences in advance, and the adventure will align with your group’s comfort level.
