Legend of the Five Rings

Legend of the Five Rings is a samurai fantasy set in Rokugan, a land where honour and duty collide with courtly intrigue and restless spirits. You play as nobles, courtiers, duelists, and monks navigating alliances, vendettas, and the weight of your personal code. Tea-house whispers matter as much as swordplay, and every choice can change your standing. Players appreciate its sharp social stakes, rich clans, and the way tension builds from quiet ceremony to sudden steel.

A session feels like a drama that mixes investigation, negotiation, and precise bursts of action. A professional Game Master frames scenes, runs formal duels, and brings folklore to life with clear, gentle guidance. It suits curious newcomers and veterans, small parties and company teams, online or in person. Want the political angle front and centre? Ask for it. Meet available Game Masters and find the style that fits you.

How to play Legend of the Five Rings

In the current edition, you select an elemental approach for your actions, then roll a handful of custom dice based on your Ring and Skill. You keep a few results to meet a target number. Success advances the story, opportunities introduce clever twists, and a rising Strife score indicates mounting pressure. Scenes progress in turns and rounds for skirmishes and duels, with clear procedures that a professional GM will guide you through as you play.

You bring a character idea and what you wish to explore. Our Game Masters provide ready plots, maps, safety tools, and physical or digital dice. One-shots utilise quick builds or pregens and focus on a single crisis, such as a diplomatic dinner that might culminate in a duel, or a village burdened by regret. Campaigns track honour, relationships, and school techniques over time. Playing online is seamless with supported tools listed here.

Common questions

Do I need to know Rokugan lore or samurai etiquette to play?

No prior knowledge is required. Our Game Masters will guide you through the social basics as you play, such as when to bow, how to propose a duel, and what it means to honour a host. You can arrive with a simple concept, like a proud warrior, a patient courtier, or a curious monk. The GM will explain how your Rings and skills influence your actions and will prompt you when a rule is relevant. If you prefer, you can begin with a prebuilt character to learn through experience. Cultural respect is important, and your GM will manage this with care.

Which edition will we play, 5e or another one?

Most groups choose Fifth Edition from Edge Studio, featuring Ring-based approaches and symbol dice. Several of our Game Masters also run Fourth Edition, and a few can accommodate earlier versions if you ask. Our Game Masters list the editions they support, allowing you to select the rules style you prefer. You can browse available GMs and see their editions here: find a Game Master.

How does L5R differ from D&D at the table?

Decision weight rests on honour, reputation, and duty more than on treasure or dungeon puzzles. Conflicts often resolve through etiquette, poetry, or a single duel observed by witnesses. You act through one of the elemental Rings, which influences both outcomes and your composure. Strife can lead to outbursts or compromise, and the narrative takes that seriously. Wounds are unpredictable, with critical injuries and scars carrying narrative consequences. Magic is limited and tied to spirits and oaths. Combat is shorter and less frequent, while investigation and ceremony take centre stage.

How lethal are duels and combat in this game?

It is sharp. A formal iaijutsu duel can conclude in a single exchange, and skirmishes can result in lasting critical injuries. A professional Game Master clearly signals risks before steel is drawn, offers honourable options like yielding or first blood, and uses NPC motives to guide fights toward meaningful stakes, rather than random brawls. If your group prefers less lethality, consequences can focus on social fallout, lost honour, or temporary setbacks. If you enjoy risk, the GM will conduct duels by the book and ensure choices have weight.

What group size is most effective for intrigue and duels?

L5R is designed for 3 to 5 players, ensuring everyone gets their moment in the spotlight during court, on the road, and in duels. With two players, you can focus on mentor and student, or yojimbo and courtier pairings, featuring tightly focused scenes. Six players can work by splitting attention between parallel intrigues or pairing characters in subplots. Sessions typically last 3 to 4 hours, allowing time for negotiations, clues, and ceremonies to have significance. A professional Game Master will manage the pacing of scenes so that no one is left waiting for long.

Can we play online, and how are the dice managed?

Yes. Online L5R is seamless. Your Game Master provides browser dice rollers or a virtual tabletop with symbol dice, so you don’t need to purchase special dice. Character sheets, Void points, and strife are managed digitally, and duels feel fantastic with clear step-by-step prompts. Voice or video works well for conveying tone and courtesy. Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while also keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!
