Mutants & Masterminds

Mutants & Masterminds delivers heartwarming superhero tales with cinematic stakes. You create a unique hero and join a team to protect your city or the galaxy. Scenes shift from investigations to rooftop chases to rescuing bystanders before the final showdown. The tone can be bright and hopeful or grounded and gritty. A professional Game Master sets the pace, showcases your powers, and ensures everyone feels included in the action.

New to tabletop gaming? This game is quick to learn, and teamwork is key. Experienced players will appreciate the rich character options and clever problem-solving. It’s an excellent choice for birthdays, friend groups, and workplace teams seeking collaboration and memorable moments. Ready to suit up? How to play Mutants & Masterminds

On your turn, describe what your hero does. Roll a d20 and add the bonus for the action, such as an attack or a skill. You need to beat a target number or the foe's defence to succeed. Damage is resisted with Toughness, so fights feel dynamic yet quick, using conditions instead of lengthy hit point calculations. Degrees of success make significant victories count. Hero Points allow you to reroll or perform a power stunt when the moment calls for it.

What you need: a hero concept, a d20, and an understanding of the tone you want. Inform the Game Master of any lines and veils. What the Game Master provides: villains, hazards, clues, and balanced Power Level targets that keep everyone challenged and safe. At the table, they manage the rules so you can stay in character. Online play runs smoothly on common virtual tabletops; see supported platforms.

For a one-shot, expect a concise mission, quick onboarding, and clear choices, often with a cast of ready-to-play heroes if you prefer. A campaign introduces ongoing threats, personal arcs, and time to refine or expand your powers within Power Level caps. Your team builds relationships, earns trust in the city, and faces a rising nemesis across linked sessions.

Common questions

Do I need to know the rules to play M&M?

Not at all. A professional Game Master explains what your hero can do and prompts you when to roll. Your character sheet lists powers in straightforward language. You describe the action, roll a d20, and the GM takes care of the calculations. New players often begin with an Archetype like Blaster or Detective, then make small adjustments. If you prefer, you can use a pre-made hero. After a few turns, the flow feels natural and you start making bold choices.

How is M&M different from D&D-style games?

M&M trades classes and long level ladders for point-buy heroes set to a Power Level. Instead of hit points, Toughness checks and conditions indicate how injured you are, allowing fights to progress quickly. Stunts and Hero Points enable you to create impressive one-off effects. Minions fall swiftly to maintain the pace of scenes, while major villains endure longer. It still employs a d20 core, so it feels familiar, but the emphasis is on superpowers first and tactical grid play second.

How do I create my hero and their abilities?

You create a concept, then spend Power Points to acquire Abilities, Skills, Advantages, and Powers. Power Level establishes limits, ensuring your stats remain balanced with the team. You can begin with an Archetype and modify it, or opt for a custom approach using arrays and Alternate Effects for versatile tricks. Our Game Masters assist in converting straightforward ideas like shadow control or shrinking into clear mechanics. For one-shots, you can choose a pre-generated character and customise the appearance and origin to your liking.

Which edition do you use, 3rd edition or earlier?

Most sessions use 3rd Edition. It is the current ruleset and supports the widest range of options. Many of our Game Masters can also run 2nd Edition on request, and simple heroes convert well between them. If you have an older character, bring it along and the GM will adapt it. You can check edition notes on each GM's profile when you browse Game Masters and message the GM if you need a specific edition.

What group size and session length suit M&M?

Mutants & Masterminds is ideal for 3 to 5 players. Two-player duos also excel in focused narratives, while 6 players can work well with a fast-paced game. A one-shot typically lasts 3 to 4 hours, providing ample time to learn, explore, and confront a significant threat. Campaign sessions usually run around 3.5 to 4 hours. Our Game Masters carefully pace scenes, minimise rule lookups, and manage initiative to ensure everyone has turns that feel meaningful.

Is M&M suitable for kids or mixed ages?

Yes. Superheroes are ideal for bright, non-grim stories. For younger players, the GM can simplify character sheets, emphasise teamwork, and keep the stakes non-lethal. Safety tools and content lines are employed. Teens can manage the full rules with some guidance. Mixed-age tables function well when adults demonstrate quick turns and provide support. If you’re after a specific tone, browse GM playstyles and choose someone who enjoys hopeful, cinematic action and patient teaching.

What players think

  • It was an amazing experience for the girls! Thank you, Marie! You were incredibly well prepared, the girls were captivated by your every word, and it felt like you had been playing together for years! Looking forward to seeing you next time!

    Annick

  • Tom was fantastic! He was really great with the kids and patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while also keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!

    Casey

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a gift for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was a fantastic GM who adapted seamlessly to our group and helped us move forward in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were quite rough. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach allowed the players to fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.
